Asphalt Paving

Asphalt Paving Ottawa

Let us help with your entire front entrance project, from asphalt paving to interlock construction.

We use a minimum 10 inches of granular along with proper compaction to achieve a solid base. Without a solid base, your asphalt driveway will not have the strength it needs to last its maximum lifetime. Murray Landscaping offers asphalt driveway paving in Ottawa and surrounding areas. We can help with peel and paves as well as new base and pave projects. Or if you have your current driveway ready with a 10” base or more, we can grade it and pave it.

Things to know about asphalt paved driveways

Asphalt is one of the most recycled materials in North America.

A typical asphalt thickness for a residential driveway is 2 inches compacted. Additional thickness may be needed depending on the weight of your vehicles and amount of traffic. This also requires an increase in cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Asphalt driveways are cost effective, durable and long lasting, tough against snow removal equipment and salt and ice and driveway projects are able to be completed quickly.

Understand that in Ottawa with our drastic climate, a minimum base of 10 inches is recommended to maintain a typical lifetime of 15-20 years. Asphalt lifetime also depends on maintenance, wear and tear, soil type and weight of vehicles.

To help extend the lifespan of your new asphalt driveway it is best to not sealcoat your driveway. Sealcoating offers no real benefit and does not allow the asphalt to stay porous. Trapping moisture and accelerating the freeze and thaw cycle. You can also reduce or eliminate your salt use in the winter or. A better alternative to salt is environmentally friendly ice-melter. Park your vehicles in the garage instead of the driveway (if possible). When the driveway is beginning to age, if you notice any cracks it is best to have them filled right away to reduce spreading.

We offer two types of new asphalt driveway installations. Depending on the current gravel base on your driveway will determine the type of installation we recommend. If your driveway has a sufficient existing gravel base of 10” or more and the old asphalt is crumbling or old we can do a “peel and pave”. A peel and pave consists of removing the existing asphalt, grading existing gravel and compacting and then paving 2” of new asphalt, grading and compacting. If your gravel base is less than 10” we recommend a “full base reconstruction”. A full base reconstruction consists of removing the existing asphalt, excavating for a new 10” gravel base, grading and compacting the gravel base properly and then installing 2” of new asphalt, grading and compacting. We only warranty full base reconstruction projects as we cannot guarantee the integrity of the driveway base unless we have installed it ourselves.

If you are not changing the size of your driveway then you typically do not require a permit. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to obtain any necessary permits with the city and abide by all by-laws. It is the responsibility of the homeowner and the liability of the homeowner to do so. We are not responsible for any fees, fines or permits.

Once we finish your driveway paving we recommend that you stay off of it for a minimum of 4 days. In hotter weather we recommend staying off of it for 7-10 days.

Costs for asphalt driveways vary based on many variables. Whether it is a peel and pave or full base reconstruction can affect the cost of your new asphalt driveway.

We offer a 2 year workmanship warranty on all asphalt driveways where we have done a full base reconstruction. For peel and pave projects we do not offer a warranty as we cannot guarantee the integrity of the driveway base unless we have installed it ourselves.

Yes we can! We specialize in interlock and landscaping services. We can help seamlessly integrate new interlock and landscaping along with your new asphalt driveway. Working with one contractor for your interlock and paving project is essential for a proper installation and sequence.
